Would you agree that two of the most vital
office tools today are the fax and the telephone? I know a man
named Elisha Gray would. Why? Well, he invented both in the mid
1800's. Now before you fall to the floor laughing at me, read
on. It's a tale that warns of the danger of procrastination of
being a man ahead of your time.
In 1876, the race was on to be the first to invent the
telephone. Elisha was one of many close to winning the race. On
February 14, he finally had his patent submission in order and
went to the US Patent office to claim victory. Can you imagine
the sickening feeling he must have gotten when he realized that
just two hours earlier that day a rival by the name of Alexander
Graham Bell had already applied for and had been awarded the
patent?
But he did get a patent for a fax machine- really. His was not
the first, but his was the first to transmit handwriting on
stationary paper, as he demonstrated via a public exhibition in
1893 when he sent a fax to the police. Unfortunately for him,
fax machines as we know them wouldn't take off with the public
until nearly 90 years later.
What's the moral to this story? If you have something you know
you need to do, don't underestimate the danger of delay. And
don't wait for someone else to come along - 2 hours or 90 years
later- and get the glory for what you can do today. You've been
